Temperature is rising and summer is coming our way! A perfect time to explore Amsterdam! But what to do? Here you will find 10 things to do in Amsterdam in July.
1. Exhibition New for Now; The Origin of Fashion
If there’s one museum a person should visit at least once in a lifetime, it’s the Rijksmuseum with its famous Rembrandt paintings. If that’s not enough reason, they now have an exhibition a fashionista can’t afford to miss; ‘New for Now; The Origin of Fashion’.
The museum exhibits two major collections of fashion prints that illustrate the development of fashion from 1600 until the 20th century, the changes in women’s en men’s fashion and the development of the fashion magazine into the fashion glossy.
This summer you can have a look at a couple of hundred of these prints. The exhibition is designed by designer Christian Borstlap, in collaboration with fashion illustrators Piet Paris and Quentin Jones. Not able to visit the Rijksmuseum? From June 2015, all 8,000 prints from these collections can be viewed on the website.

2. Vondelpark Open Air Theatre
Like New York, Amsterdam has a famous park as well, i.e. the Vondelpark, where everybody spends their lazy weekends when the sun is out. In the center of the famous Vondelpark you can find the Vondelpark Open Air Theatre. This is the perfect spot for beautiful concerts and performances by Dutch established and upcoming artists. The best bit? The theatre is freely accessible and for 75% of the performances language is no problem. During summer, every Friday, Saturday and Sunday there is a varied program of modern dance, standup comedy and music.

3. Restaurant Citroën
The new place to be in Amsterdam is the recently opened restaurant Citroën (next to the Olympic Stadion). Located in a former Citroën-garage, hence the name, the garage is transformed into a stylish restaurant with a rooftop terrace! Perfect for a drink and a bite on a sunny day. The restaurant has an industrial interior and is decorated with fifty shades of pink. The food is a delicious combination of dishes from around the world.

4. Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek
The fashion party of Amsterdam; the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Amsterdam. Visit the downtown program with 10 days of fashion with 10 public unique events at 10 cultural locations. During Amsterdam Fashion Week there are numerous catwalk shows at the Westergasfabriek. It’s the international event for the fashion industry and press, as the new collections are being presented. A couple of shows are accessible for fashion fans.

5. Robeco Summer Nights
Do you like listening to music? Then you should definitely go to the Concertgebouw where the Robeco Summer Nights are being held. The Robeco Summer Nights are wonderful concerts, from classical to jazz and from cabaret to film scores. It’s a magical beginning of summer with international soloists, orchestras and unique cooperation’s. Film scores from the West Side Story, James Bond and Gladiator come to life with a live symphony orchestra. After the concert there is SummerNights Live! where you can meet the performers.

6. Restaurant/bar de Biertuin
Everybody loves the Biertuin. Even if beer (in Dutch ‘bier’) is not your favourite drink, you will like it there. The friendly staff will help you choose the perfect beer. There is a terrace with large umbrella’s and heaters. So when it’s getting chilly at night you can still relax and sit outside. They serve beers from the local brewery, but also beers with silly names like Snake Dog and Punk IPA. Wine or other drinks are no problem. And they are famous for their delicious chicken! Every Sunday night there is a pub quiz.

7. World Press Photo
Last chance to see World Press Photo ’15 in De Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam. This is the beginning of the world tour of the international contest. The exhibition contains impressive press photos of 41 prizewinners of 17 countries in 8 categories; Contemporary Issues, Daily Life, General News, Long-Term Projects, Nature, Portraits, Sports en Spot News. To exhibit the photos a special construction is used so it seems like the pictures are floating into the gothic space of the church.

Feel like dancing between flamingos? It’s possible in Artis, the famous Amsterdam zoo! Every Saturday in June, July and August, Artis is open until sunset. On these special summer nights there are live performances from famous artists. You can also have a picnic or a BBQ. There are Green Egg-barbeques with grilled shrimps and burgers. Beware the monkeys won’t beat you to it!

9. Wine bar GlouGlou
No need to go to France for a nice glass of wine. Wine bar GlouGlou has recently opened its doors in the trendy district the Pijp. Here you can find a typical French atmosphere with bistro chairs on the terrace. They only serve organic wines without any artificial additions. A platter of cheese with that and you are in France! Would love to sip the wine back home? Visit the store for that bottle to take home with you.
