As Esther Dorhout Mees says “The combination of the greatness of a grand Theater where once performances in beautiful costumes and decors were created in contrast with the decline and melancholic oblivion of these particular theaters in decay fascinates me endlessly“.
The models in the Dorhout Mees show at Amsterdam Fashion Week walked against a backdrop of a live orchestra playing the Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky and the 45th Symphony by Haydn. With a movie playing on the background and strings of gigantic fairy lights it gave the Dorhout Mees Fall/Winter 2015-2016 show a theatrical feel. That was the effect, designer Esther Dorhout Mees must have wanted as her collection is inspired by theatres in decay.
Titled ‘STAGES’, the collection features contrasts of form and materials, of velvet, decay, concrete and handmade shoes inspired by ballet pointe shoes. The costumes, corsets, materials used in the collection refer to the heydays of theatres and the decay thereafter.
