It’s that time of year when shopaholics get an adrenalin rush. That is when the sales have landed. Snapping up that item at greatly reduced prices does wonders for the mood of the shopaholic (which I can attest first-hand). But how to prepare for the sales and get the most out of your money? Well here are five sale shopping tips you might want to know.
1. Go through your wardrobe and shoe/bag collections
Take stock of what’s in your closet (with some luck you might find some long forgotten favourites) and make a list of items you need to buy. Rummage through all your shoes and see which shoes need to be replaced and what you’re missing. Same thing with your bags. No need to buy a clutch if you already have a dozen.
2. Do your groundwork
Start browsing your favourite online stores or go shopping and start preparing a wishlist. If you are out shopping try the items on and take pictures. Jot down the size, brand and colour of the pieces you like.
Online shopper? Save the items in your size so when the sales start you only have to hit the purchase button.
3. Buy the items you want now
One of the biggest peeves of online shopping I find is ordering the wrong size and I’m not the only one. As during sales, items are sold out quickly the right size might no longer be available once you’ve received your item. So what I sometimes do is order the item for full-price, try it on at home, check whether it goes with what I already have and return it. Of course, this only works if you don’t have to pay a lot of delivery and return fees but it ensures that when the sales hit you order the right size.
Don’t have the time to do it? Order two sizes during the sales and return the item you don’t fit.
4. Take a time-out before you push the buy button
Only buy items during the sales which you would have bought full price as well (if you had the funds for it). This ensures that you don’t get bitten by the sale bug (i.e. buying items for cheap just because they’re cheap) and end up with clothes you otherwise wouldn’t have bought. And if you have, no worries just return it.
5. Check the returns policy
Checking the returns policy during the sales is crucial. Returns policies during sales are often shorter than during non-sales period which means you can end up losing a lot of money if you don’t return it on time.
