February is an exciting time to be in London with a whole host of fashionable and cultured activities to choose from. Here are some of our favourite picks in this months 10 Things To Do In London In February 2016 (with added bonus) :
1. London Fashion Week
If the great British weather is wearing you down, London Fashion Week’s SS16 offerings may be just the antidote for your weary spirits. Show tickets are not easy unless you are part of the fashion fraternity but you can hang out at Brewer Street Car Park and watch the circus (Suzy Menkes’s words no less) unfold. There are some fab exhibitions that are free to view and showcase some wonderful indie designers.
When? Till the 19-23rd February 2016
Where? Mainly in and around Brewer Street Car Park, Brewer Street, London W1F OLA (note: since last September London Fashion Week (‘LFW’) is now taking place at Brewer Street (and not Somerset House)) although individual show locations tend to vary. Check the London Fashion Week website for the schedule here.
2. London Fashion Weekend
If you don’t manage to get a ticket to LFW or find the time to hang out at Brewer Street Car Park during the thick of it all – London Fashion Weekend offers a chic alternative within the surrounds of the very quirky Saatchi Gallery.
When? Till the 25-28th February 2016
Where? Saatchi Gallery, Kings Road, London, SW3 4SQ
3. Chinese New Year
London puts on a great show every year for Chinese New Year. Celebrate the Year of the Monkey with a dose of Chinese culture, food and shopping at various locations around the city.
When? 14th February 2016 (although Chinese New Year is celebrated on 8 February 2016. The main festivities in London take place on 14 February).
Where? Chinatown, Trafalgar Square and West End, London.
5. Cupid’s Capsule at the London Eye
I’m a bit low key when it comes to Valentine’s Day celebrations. However, if you fancy making a big impression and putting an impressive show, try hiring a private capsule at the London Eye. It’s not cheap but it certainly is indulgent and will no doubt impress your date!
When? January 16th to March 6th 2016
Where? The London Eye, Westminster Bridge Road, London, SE1 7PB.
6. Pancake Day Race
A local Shrove Tuesday tradition, the Bankside locals practice their pancake tossing skills and get competitive with a pancake-flipping race! Whoever thought Londoners don’t know how to have fun without spending silly money – think again! The event also supports a number of local and national charities so one more reason to support it!
When? 9 February 2016 (12.30pm – 2.30pm)
Where? Marlborough Sports Garden, 11-25 Union St, London, SE1 1SD.
7. Kew Lates
To add a bit of tropical summer to your wintery February days, try getting to Kew Gardens for Kew Lates – a festival of cocktails, music and fun with a Brazilian theme. Tickets sell out very quickly but keep an eye out for returns or Twitter offers from those who can’t make it!
When? 11 February to 3 March 2016
Where? Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Richmond, Surrey, TW9 3AB.
8. Fashion Rules Exhibition at Kensington Palace
Explore the wardrobes of Her Majesty The Queen, Princess Margaret and Diana, Princess of Wales at Kensington Palace. Get an insight into fashion across several decades and the art of diplomatic dressing when you visit the exhibition ‘Fashion Rules Restyled’.
When? From 12 February 2016
Where? Kensington Palace, London
9. L’etoile at the Royal Opera House
Mark Elder conducts The Royal Opera’s first production of Emmanuel Chabrier’s three act wacky comic opera. The show is directed by Mariame Clément and is definitely worth checking out.
When? 1 to 24 February 2016
Where? Royal Opera House, Bow Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2E 9DD.
10. Staycation at The Hoxton
If all you want is a quite break and breakfast in bed but without having to break the bank, do what my friend did and book yourself into the Hoxton (both Shoreditch and Holborn are great) for a little staycation. The boutique hotels are in great locations so you could take yourself out for a walk, take in a matinee if you feel up to it or simply order room service all day! I love this wee hotel!
When? We suggest February but anytime works!
Where? The Hoxton Holborn or The Hoxton Shoreditch
11. Sample sales
Issa London, Vilshenko and Herve Leger are amongst the designers whose samples will be peddled for a lot less than RRP this month. Check out our London sample sales section for full details.
Have a fabulous February!
